Paul Briede (b. 1985) was awarded fourth place in the 2003 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for his engineering project. As a graduate student, he took a large fraction of the plates for the Palomar-National Geographic Sky Survey, and his analysis of them produced the Abell catalogue of rich clusters of galaxies. Swedenborg began publication of Sweden's first scientific journal in 1715. Today the lake is famous as an area of great natural beauty.

Utrecht is a city in the Netherlands renowned for its university and the Sonnenborgh Observatory. The project was initiated on 1989 Oct. His methods of meticulous excavation, recording and sequential dating became standard practice in the field. Gale D. Gant (b. 1936) helped organize the Palomar Observatory's 1.2-m Schmidt Oschin Telescope plate archive. He got his first lessons at the organ from his father Paul Bruhns, a pupil of Franz Tunder. Its prosperity was and is still based on the cloth industry. He contributed extensively to botany and zoology.

Asteroid of the Day: Cleshir

Named in honor of Clinton B. Ford, secretary of the American Association of Variable Star Observers since 1948 and president in 1961, the year of his retirement from a career in industry. Following this, he took the words of Douglas Adams in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to heart--"With a degree in maths, and another in astrophysics, it was either that or back to the dole queue on Monday"--and moved to Australia, where he spent two years at the Anglo-Australian Observatory. Through Goethe, he was appointed head clergyman at the court of Weimar in 1776. Although both are interested in astrometry and astrophotography, Boeker is also experienced in building observatories and constructing telescope mounts.

Yukio Sakurai (b. 1953) is a local government official and an amateur astronomer in Japan. When she was in the U.S., she regularly reported on the activities of NASA and Japanese astronauts. A fine observer of the sun, he was in charge of the solar section of the Unione Astrofili Italiani, and he served as secretary of the Unione for the four years preceding his tragic death in a road accident. He attends the Germantown Academy, Fort Washington, Pennsylvania.

Named for a residential district of the city of Potsdam, known as the summer residence of Emperor Wilhelm I and for its famous film studios. He also discussed the orbit of periodic comet Brooks 2 (1889 V) in great detail. For the New Millennium Deep Space One spacecraft that was launched on 1998 Oct. He teaches at the Half Hollow Hills High School West, Dix Hills, New York.

Named in honor of David J. Eicher, founder and editor-in-chief of Deep Sky magazine. He enjoyed an almost unprecedented career as a radio and later as a television moderator, becoming one of the most popular stars of German entertainment. As governor intendent of Cuyo, he created the Andes army, crossed those mountains, and by conquering the Spanish army at the battles of Chacabuco and Maipu (1817-1818) assured Chile's independence. She has found evidence for extensive, olivine-rich bedrock on Mars.

Asteroid of the Day: Spreria

Named by the discoverer in honor of his home valley, the Swiss canton and town of Glarus. He has written numerous articles on these subjects, including some on Canadian meteorites, in the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and he has been of much practical help to the astrometric program carried out at the University of Victoria. He died at a relatively young age on 1996 Sept. It was first mentioned as a village with the church of St. Michael Archangel in 1263, and as a town from the year 1365, but the site was first settled in ancient times.

Named for Pliny (62-114), the Roman author who described the A.D. The comet discoveries were made visually over the period 1940 to 1968, the latter year adding three discoveries. OAFA has made important contributions to astronomy in the areas of meridian and extrameridian astrometry. A famous woman warrior and general of the Mysians, Hiera fought in the Trojan War but was edited from Homer's account because, Philostratus says, "this greatest and finest of women would have outshone his heroine Helen".
